The BBFC currently issues the following certificates. The current category symbols were introduced in October 2019, replacing the previous ones that had been in place since 2002.

SymbolNameDescriptionGuidelines
UniversalSuitable for all. There is nothing unsuitable for children aged 4 and over. Until 2009, there was also a Uc ("Universal Children") certificate, for videos that were particularly suitable for young children.[4]
Parental
Guidance
General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.May contain mild language (frequent/aggressive use may result in the work being passed at a higher category), mild violence and sex or drug references.[5]
12/12ASuitable only for persons of 12 years and over. Not to be supplied to any person below that age.
Generally suitable for those aged 12 and over; those under 12 admitted, but only if accompanied by an adult.
The 12 category applied to cinema releases from August 1989 to 2002, but has only been used for home media since 1994. The 12A category has been used for cinema releases since 2002.

May have adolescent themes. May contain discrimination, soft drugs, moderate language, moderate violence, sex references and nudity. Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Use of strong language may be permitted based on frequency and how it is used, as well as contextual justification.[6]

15Suitable only for persons of 15 years and over. Not to be supplied to any person below that age.May have fairly mature themes. May contain (frequent) strong language, strong violence, strong sex references, nudity without graphic detail and hard drugs. Sexual activity may be portrayed but without any strong detail. Sexual violence may be shown if discreet and justified by context. Use of very strong language may be permitted based on frequency and how it is used, as well as contextual justification.[7]
18Suitable only for persons of 18 years and over. Not to be supplied to any person below that age. Will always have mature themes. May contain (very) strong language, very strong violence (including strong sexual violence), explicit sex references (including sexual activity and real sex), nudity and hard drugs. (Sex works cannot be placed at "18".)[8]
R18To be supplied only in sex shops and shown only in licensed cinemas to persons of not less than 18 years. Will always contain hardcore pornography and sexual content, defined as material intended for sexual stimulation, including:
  • clear images of real sexual activity
  • strong fetish material
  • explicit animated images
  • sight of certain acts such as triple simultaneous penetration and snowballing.

There remains a range of material that is often cut from the R18 rating including:

  • strong images of injury in BDSM or spanking works
  • urolagnia
  • scenes suggesting incest even if staged

The following are not permitted:

  • references to underage sex or childhood sexual development
  • aggressive behaviour such as hair-pulling or spitting on a performer

More cuts are demanded in this category than any other category.[9]

Material that is exempt from classification sometimes uses symbols similar to BBFC certificates, for example an E "certificate". There is no legal obligation, nor a particular scheme, for labelling material that is exempt from classification.[10] On the BBFC's online classification database, material that has been refused a classification uses an "N/A" symbol in place of a rating symbol.

Age-verification certificate

As part of the implementation of the Digital Economy Act 2017, the BBFC and NCC Group were planning to introduce an age-verification certificate (AVC or AV Certificate), a voluntary, non-statutory certificate awarded to Internet age-verification providers who meet standards of privacy and data security. Plans to mandate online age-verification to deny those who do not prove they are aged over 18 access to pornographic website content were subsequently abandoned.[11][12]
